A tandem-axle plow truck is a quarter-million-dollar asset whose entire purpose is distributing the most corrosive material it will ever encounter. No other fleet vehicle has that relationship with what destroys it, and no other fleet gets less opportunity to wash.
Departments usually discover the cost the same way: trucks that should serve fifteen years are cycled out at eleven or twelve, not because the drivetrain failed but because the frame did. That is a capital problem showing up years after the maintenance decision that caused it.
Brine is worse than rock salt, not better
Liquid anti-icing sticks. Rock salt bounces and scatters; brine coats, wicks into seams and stays wet against metal for far longer. Departments that moved to pre-wetting and direct liquid application often see corrosion accelerate even as road service improves — the material is doing its job on the road and on the truck at the same time.
The spreader is part of the problem
A plow truck does not just drive through salt, it carries a hopper of it. Material works into the body, the frame behind the spreader, the hoist and the hydraulics. That is a concentration no other fleet vehicle experiences.
Washing happens at the worst possible time
Trucks come back at the end of a long event, often at night, often with crews about to go back out. If washing requires effort at that moment it does not happen — and the chlorides sit on warm metal in a heated garage, which is the fastest corrosion condition there is.
What actually works on a plow fleet
The constraint that decides everything is time at end of event. A wash routine that takes a driver ten minutes after a fourteen-hour shift will be skipped, and a routine that is skipped through the worst weeks of the season is worth almost nothing. The systems that work on plow fleets are the ones that ask nothing of an exhausted driver beyond driving.

The chemistry matters as much as the water here. Rinsing dilutes chlorides and moves some of them; a neutralising agent reacts with what is left in the seams and box sections, which is where plow truck frames actually fail. On a fleet carrying this much salt exposure, rinsing alone is the most common expensive mistake.
Wash during the season, not after it
A spring clean-up after the salt has sat on metal for four months is remediation, not prevention. The damage is done by then.
Include the spreader and hoist
The body and hydraulics behind the hopper carry material at concentrations the frame never sees on an ordinary truck.
Track it for the budget conversation
Extended replacement cycles are the argument that lands with commissioners. That requires documenting corrosion and cost year over year, not just washing.
Protect the resale too
Trucks cycled out with sound frames are worth materially more at auction than the same unit rusted underneath.
